Emissions from large ships in international waters are largely unregulated. Besides oil spills shipping accounts for 18 to 30 percent of the nitrogen oxide and 9 percent of the sulphur oxides. 20 supertankers emit as much sulfur into the atmosphere as all cars in the world. New legislation to curb this will become effective in 2020.
