[415] Special Economic Zones Network
Territories designated as Special Economic Zones (SEZs) originated hundreds of years ago but it were the Chinese zones near Hong Kong that changed the industrial trajectory of China so dramatically that almost every other developing nation tried to emulate the recipe. SEZs allow hyper-capitalist conditions to flourish and contain them at the same time in countries that like to participate economically in globalization without subjecting their countries’ societies to the side effects. The phenomenon has grown rapidly over the last 20 years, largely beyond the public’s perception. A network of SEZs would have massive implications.

Schon vor Hunderten von Jahren gab es Sonderwirtschaftszonen wie Freihäfen. Aber erst seit die an Hong Kong grenzenden Zonen die chinesische Wirtschaftsentwicklung dramatisch beschleunigte, versuchen fast alle Schwellenländer das Konzept zu übernehmen. Die auf hyper-kapitalistische Wirtschaftsbedingungen zugeschnittenen Zonen erlauben die Vorteile der Globalisierung zu nutzen, ihre Gesellschaften davon aber zu isolieren. Eine politische Vernetzung dieser Zonen hätte weitreichende Folgen.
