Since around 2007 over half of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050 the number is projected to increase to 2/3. Large, so called ‘global cities’, can be seen as the building blocks of globalization, forming a global network of production, finance, and telecommunications. The 150 global cities shown here are not necessarily the largest but the most relevant to globalization. Typically they are more connected among each other than to their surrounding rural hinterland.
Globale Städte
Seit etwa 2007 lebt mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung in Städten. Bis 2050 wird es voraussichtlich ⅔ der Menschheit sein. Große, sogenannte "globale Städte”, können als Standbeine der Globalisierung betrachtet werden, die ein globales Finanz-, Telekommunikations- und Produktionsnetzwerk bilden. Die hier gezeigten 150 Städte sind nicht unbedingt die größten, aber die für die Globalisierung wichtigsten. Sie sind untereinander stärker verbunden als mit ihren umliegenden ländlichen Randgebieten.
