Almost half of all plastic production is from Asia. Asian rivers, however, carry almost 90% of worldwide plastic debris into the oceans. The majority of which has either broken down into nano-particles that would have become absorbed in organic matter or has sunk and formed large deposits at greater depth or the ocean floor.

50% allen Plastiks wird in Asien hergestellt. 90% des maritimen Plastikmülls gelangt durch Flüsse in Asien in die Weltmeere. Ein Großteil des Plastikmenge erscheint inzwischen zu Nanopartikeln zerkleinert und in den biologischen Kreislauf resorbiert oder/und ist in größere Meerestiefen abgesunken.
