Flows of cross-border refugees in 2011 are represented by five widths of bright lines, the thinnest showing a flow of 5,000 - 25,000 refugees, and the thickest a flow of 500,000 refugees or more. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) mandate does not cover the increasing number of internally displaced people.

The top 30 countries (red dots) with the largest amount of refugees residing in other countries in 2010, have lines extending from them to countries where their refugees are living. 7 thicknesses of lines illustrate the amount of refugees. 1 - 0-5,000; 2 - 5-10,000; 3 - 10-25,000; 4 - 25-50,000; 5 - 50-100,000; 6 - 100-500,000; 7 - >500,000.
