Countries identified in blue had committed more than 1% of their armed forces to the 16 UN peace-keeping missions ongoing throughout the world in 2005. The 250,000 military personnel on peace-keeping duty carry small weapons which can only be used in self-defense, (i.e. when they are being fired upon or their lives are in danger). Since the first peace-keeping mission was mounted in 1946, tasks have become more and more complex as forces are being counted on not only to keep the peace but also to stabilize war-torn societies.
