Humankind attempts to create order, regulate access to resources, and manage crises and conflict in this delicate organism called the international community. Beyond the ocean shoreline’s immediate 12 miles, a country has economic sovereignty over another 200 miles of ocean for its exclusive exploration and exploitation. This makes even the tiniest islands economically important–while being a potential source of conflict.
